History and Background of ACIS

Islamic Affairs

Religious Unit is the original entity that established on 3 March 1971 and is placed under the Division of Student Affairs. It was established with the aim of helping students to equip themselves with the basic knowledge of religion, in addition to solving religious issue that always arise among students.

In February 1995, Religious Unit was given a new name and expanded into Islamic Development Unit, Publication Unit and Training and Human Development. It was placed under the Islamic Integrated Service Centre (PKIB) which is based at the Islamic Centre. Its role and function were extended including the spread of religious service among staff as well as its substantive tasks for the students.

n January 2001, it returned to its former function under the Student Affairs and revert to Religious Unit. In May 2002, it was revamped and given a new name, namely Centre for Islamic Thought and Understanding (CITU). Due to its role and function are needed by the Student Affairs, then in early January 2003, it was placed again under the Student Affairs in the name of Religious Advisory Centre.

On 13 January 2004, Religious Advisory Centre merged with the Islamic Education Centre and placed under Centre for Islamic Thought and Understanding (CITU) and given a new name as a Department of Islamic Development (JKI). Its staff consists of Officer of Islam Affairs, Assistant Officer of Islam Affairs and Assistant of Islamic Affairs.

Academic Affairs

Islamic Education was offered formally to the students of Institut Teknologi MARA (ITM) in 1975 in the name of Islamic Civilisation. The results of the Dialogue of Islamic Education Institutions of Higher Education in Malaysia from 20 - 22 June 1977, ITM has made Islamic Education course compulsory under the name 'Islamic Education Subject' to all Muslim students across ITM campus. The course was implemented two (02) contact hours a week within six (6) semester, which is equivalent to twelve (12) credit hours. At the early stages of implementation, the subject was handled by the Islamic Education Unit (UPI) under the Dean of Academic Affairs. A total of 28 lecturers who have the religious qualification comes from various higher education institutions, are working in this unit.

Islamic Education Unit (UPI) has upgraded its status to be one entity by the name of Islamic Education Centre (PPI) on 1 April 1983, which is equivalent to 17 Jamadil Akhir 1403H. The objective of PPI establishment:

1. Change UPI status to ‘Centre' with its own identity
2. Increase the ability to deliver effective educating skills in implementing academic programmes of ITM

Starting July 1983, all non-Muslims students are required to take Islamic Civilisation course and it is not compulsory to pass the examination. In July 1985, all non-Muslim students are required to take Islamic Civilisation course, pass the examination and credits are given. Those who fail the examination are required to repeat it until they pass.

The transformation of ITM to UiTM also affect PPI. Islamic Education courses at diploma level offered only during three semesters that are equivalent to six (06) credit hours, starting in May 2008. However, for the Bachelor degree with honour level, the PPI is responsible for offering courses TITAS I and II. Each student is required to take these courses together with four (04) credit hours starting in Nov 1998.

On 13 January 2004, which is equivalent to 20 Zulkaedah 1424H, the roles of PPI are expanded with the establishment of Centre for Islamic Thought and Understanding (CITU). The proposal of the merger between the Islamic Education Centre and Religious Advisory Centre was presented in UiTM Executive Committee Meeting on 19 March 2003. The objective of its establishment is to become Islam integrated knowledge centre, thought, understanding and services. CITU has enlarged its scope of education services to postgraduate programmes and handling of new programmes in the field of contemporary Islamic studies for diploma and Bachelor's degree.

In December 2012, CITU’s application to upgrade into Akademi Pengajian Islam Kontemporari / Academy of Contemporary Islamic Studies (ACIS) was approved by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia (JPT, KPT). This establishment is a result of restructuring and rebranding Centre for Islamic Thought and Understanding (CITU). This allows ACIS to offer its own programmes. Through this restructuring, the teaching, learning and Islam services can be reinforced aligned with the the vision and mission of UiTM.
